Yep, you need a HD tv. They are a Hi Def output device, only benefits from a Blu Ray disk on a Hi Def TV!
Blu ray disc players will work on regular TV and it will play regular DVDs. Blu ray players like the PS3, up scales standard DVDs (which runs on 480 interlace, the number of lines of resolution) to an equivalent 1080 interlace, thereby improving the video image quality a bit. To see the advantage of bluray discs incredible video image, you need to have an HDTV. Video image and sound for that matter, is only as good as the weakest link. Even if you have a bluray player and bluray disk playing, if you play it on a regular TV, the quality will be no better than standard DVD. If you have an HDTV, and you play a standard DVD and bluray player, it will be slightly better than if you are running it on regular DVD player.
My suggestion is to research and get an HDTV before you invest in a blu ray player, because that is the first requirement in getting an HD image. After that, get your blu ray player and you can rent/buy blu ray disks.
I have HD projector and LCD HD flat screen and connected a PS3 as my blu ray player.
I will include sites on blu ray so you can understand the technology.
